CLEARFIELD - R. Brent Kofoed, loving husband, father,
son, brother and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 21, 2009 after a long and
courageous battle with cancer. Brent was born August 6, 1947 in Ogden, Utah to Rulon H. and Melba
Hobbs Kofoed. He had an amazing talent for many things, one of which was all things music. As early
as high school, he set himself apart by becoming the first Ben Lomond High student to play the
bagpipe.
After graduating from Ben Lomond High School in 1965, Brent attended
Weber State College and then went on to serve in the United States Coast Guard. Here he became the
first trumpeter in the United States Coast Guard Band. It was this role that eventually gave him an
opportunity later in life to play for President George W. Bush in Salt Lake City, Utah. Brent could
play just about any brass instrument, from the euphonium in the Ogden Concert Band to the coronet
to the trumpet to the French horn.
Brent was an equally skilled golfer who never missed a weekend golf
game, rain, shine, or snow, and who registered for every amateur golf tournament in the western
United States. He enjoyed the weekly associations with the Ogden Breakfast Exchange Club, and he
was actively involved in raising money for the “Shoes for Tots” program. Brent will be missed at
the annual Ogden Christmas Village hot chocolate booth; he will also be missed at his Thursday
night bible study group.
Brent married the love of his life, Karen Kawa, on May 9, 1992. They
spent an amazing seventeen years enjoying the life they had together. In the months preceding his
passing, Brent fought tirelessly against all odds to enjoy every second he was given. He and Karen
not only traveled the United States but also traveled internationally to Canada, Europe, and
Australia, creating the many memories and stories that will remain in his passing. We will all miss
his wildly amusing narratives, big smile, and caring heart.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Kawa Kofoed, his daughter Gillian
D’Alessandro (Joseph), his mother Melba Hobbs Kofoed, his brothers David (Suzanne) of El Paso,
Texas; Alfred (Jan) of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Steven (LuAnn) of Sandy, Utah; and his
grandchildren, Edee Burton and Charles D’Alessandro of Salt Lake City, Utah. He will be missed by
his sweet dog, Dodi, who always brought a smile to his face at even the most difficult of times. He
was preceded in death by his father Rulon Kofoed and his sister Kathleen Kofoed
Wood.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 26, 2009 at
Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd in Ogden, Utah. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington
Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd, Ogden, Utah.
