WICHITA, KS - Michael I. Winward, 61, died September 14, 2008. He was
born in Ogden, UT, January 9, 1947 to Irvin and Nedra.
The entire Winward family had many family outings of
camping, fishing, hunting and backpacking. Michael spent time helping his grandfather and Uncle
Marvin with their sheep. He loved riding horses and that’s when he became a true cowboy.
Michael graduated from Ben Lomand H.S. in Ogden in 1965. In
1966, Michael began his military career in the Army Reserves. He was drafted into the regular Army
in 1969 and served for 2 years as a helicopter pilot in Korea and Vietnam. Michael returned to the
Reserves and proudly served his country for over 11 years. He earned 13 medals during his tours of
duty and was honorably discharged in 1974 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. He continued to serve his
country working for the Department of Defense as a Software QA Specialist where he met his best
friend, Del Coulson. He met and married Dorothy in 1989. He quickly became “dad” to her daughters,
Daralyn and Dacia, and a doting grandfather to Zach, Jimmy and Evan. His daughter, Allicia, was
born in UT in Nov., 1972 and lost her battle with cancer in 2005. Her children, Gage and Ariana,
live in Carson City, NV.
Michael, Dorothy, Del and Cheryl, traveled and enjoyed
motorcycling. Michael and Dorothy were privileged to join the American Legion Riders family and
made trips with them to Washington, D.C. as a part of Rolling Thunder, Carry the Flame. Michael was
diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2003, but still rode his motorcycle with the ALR. He rode
as long as his health would allow until losing his hard fought battle. Survivors: wife, Dorothy J.;
daughters, Daralyn J. (Don) Turner of Chelsea, OK, Dacia M. Kennedy of Wichita; sisters, Brenda
(Mike) Call, JoLynn (Tom) Fowles, all of Ogden, UT; grandchildren, Zach, James, Gage, Ariana and
